William Giles was a wood-engraver, lithographer, etcher and painter. He was born in Reading and went on to study at the Royal College of Art and later in Paris. His most notable works are watercolour and colour-prints of landscapes and birds.

The British Museum opened its doors in 1759 and has become one of the world’s best-known and most-visited museums. The museum’s wide-ranging collections include about eight million objects covering two million years of human history. Due to its objects being widely collected during the era of the British Empire, its permanent collection is among the largest and most comprehensive in existence.
